Alineaire

Alineaire, french artistic game collective

Alineaire is a collective of digital artists founded in 2014 who mix games, technology and gestures. We create digital and interactive installations strongly inspired by video games, exhibited on the French and international territory, in libraries, festivals and art galleries.

Philosophy

We create our own games, both conceptually, as well as in software and hardware. Thus, we develop our games using different programming languages, we create our own visuals (images, videos, textures, shaders) and we compose our own music. In order to have a maximum of creative freedom, we also create our own peripherals (woodwork and electronics). Thanks to these means, each member takes ownership of the Alineaire project personally. Whether it is as an object of creation, analysis, curation, as a process of creation or reception, we invest our experiences as a field of experimentation we make think about the artistic scope of the video game.

Our main objective is to question the narrative and artistic means of video games. For the narrative, we invest our personal experiences in the creation of games in order to produce intimate and authentic works. For the artistic, we engage our sensibility with both a conceptual and political look at the world. The whole is organized around a definition of play as poetic action where doing is as important as seeing or hearing. In fact, we defend that video games can be considered as art, capable of poetry, reflection on the world and sensitivity of their authors.

What is the game in the artistic sense proposed by Alineaire? It is above all an art of inventing play, of play as a way of looking at the world, of play as poetic sensitivity. Thus, the game is defined as a cultural activity that evolves with the times, the encounters, the experiences. It is in this sense that we make games with modern technologies. But the game that interests us always engages a first-person scope, through the action of the body on the world around it. Above all, the game as a way of being in the world is, for us, a game as a way of being through action in the world. To play is to act in the first person, sometimes to experience pleasure (entertainment), sometimes to experience the world differently (empathy), sometimes to ask questions.

Alineaire’s activity has stopped since 2019. The collective has dissolved, each member starts solo projects. Most of the projects have allowed me to feed my reflection in my thesis defended in 2016, « Artistic sensibility and videogame creation: game critique by the game and ludographic model ».

Thank you for this incredible journey (alphabetical) : Jérémie Aronoweiz, Piers Bishop, Morgan Fabby, Jonathan Giroux, Mélanie Machado, Henri Morawski, Guillaume Noisette, Gaëlle Oliveau, Sylvain Raudrant, Jeason Suarez, Noellie Velez, Pascal Viette, and every people I met for the productions.

Alineaire’s creations

2806

2806 is Alineaire’s latest creative project. It proposes to a couple of players to each use an alternative controller evoking the sexuality of a partner. Sober texts invite to solve puzzles. The whole remains sufficiently allusive for us to understand what it is about, but the aesthetics and the science-fiction narration allow to create a humorous shift. The game deals with themes of sexuality, consent, communication…

Starship & Avoid Gamejockey

The first prototype of the Game Jockey invited players to control a colored circle on the screen using two buttons on the floor. The buttons allowed the player to move his colored circle left or right. On the screen, different obstacles approached and their contact caused the destruction of the player’s colored circle. During this time, an operator on the side had a mixer allowing to modify various parameters of the game: speed of movement, frequency of appearance of the obstacles, size of the obstacles, visual elements, etc. The whole was enhanced by a musical composition produced in parallel to the event on which the game experience was synchronized. This first prototype confirmed the potential of the Game Jockey experience.

Zeneratif (2018)

Zeneratif is an interactive and playful installation, whose aim is to plunge visitors into a state of calm and loss of self through the combined use of visual and sound stimuli. It invests the exhibition space through four buttons and a projection on surface. This one represents a field of flowers, with petals floating in the wind controlled by each of the buttons. The installation is based on a procedural generation of music, implying that the music evolves through the players’ actions. The actions are extremely limited to invite experimentation and contemplation.

Recreation is a collaborative game reminiscent of Twister. You have to press some colored buttons in order to make the right body figures. It is better to be several, because there are 15 buttons! At each turn of the game, a picture is taken, allowing the creation of a gif with everyone in the most delicate positions!

Récréation is an original creation for the inauguration of the Canopée in Châtelet-les-Halles (Paris, France). The media library of the Canopée Fontaine proposed us to make an original realization exploiting the outdoor public space. We then thought about a game using buttons and a screen, prefiguring our work on the game jockey.

By wishing to focus on the multiplayer and cooperative game, the idea of a game extended in the space makes it impossible to win alone. We must ask the spectators to become players by inviting them.

« Fleeing the War » is an asymmetrical platform video game for 1 player, with a strong symbolism where you control, at the same time, two families who must flee their country at war. The families will go through 6 stages representing as many metaphorical steps of the journey to freedom: peace, the surprise attack, the crossing of the continent, the endless desert, the crossing of the border, life or death. The player will thus play two families, at the same time, but with slightly different game components. The slight difficulty settings will thus represent the symbolic variables of escaping a war that can go very wrong.

Through this experience we wanted to create a sense of questioning about the issue of migration. The goal is that the players become aware of the very random conditions of migration through the game.

Datacore (2015)

Initially developed as part of Alineaire’s artist residency at Visage du Monde, the objective was to design a video game on the theme of « Big Data » using the Reactive touch table.

Each player can create a small piece of a planet that will be composed as each participant participates. Each participation will create a different planet. Indeed, depending on the place or time where a piece of the planet is created, the color of this piece will change. There is thus a trace of the passage of the past players. Once the planet reaches a certain volume stage, it will collapse on itself and send a last picture of itself on Twitter.

Duckitty / Coin-coin contre Minou (2014)

Duckitty is not as childish as it sounds. This game pits the dreaded duck team against the mischievous cat team. Both teams have to catch a candy that will appear randomly from the edges of the screen. The candy is caught by touching your partner’s hand, and the fastest team wins the round!

Under the appearance of a childish and naive video game, the great difficulty is to coordinate with your partner and to accept that we touch. Of course, they are only ducks and cats. But are you faster than the other team? Duckitty invites 2 teams of 2 players to compete in a game of observation and reflexes. Teams are invited to touch each other’s skin as quickly as possible. The first team to touch each other wins the round. If a team touches each other too soon, they lose a point. The first team to win 5 points wins the game.

This interactive installation is part of the art video game trend, seeking to mix playful contributions with the exhibition space. The game exploits the touch as an interface. The installation is very sensitive, any part of the body is conductive, except the clothes.

Super (2014)

SUPER is much more than a video game, it is a SUPER video game.

Thanks to its large controller and its small screen, you can explore different playful, funny, atypical, singular, touching and especially familiar worlds. Indeed, SUPER takes the classics of the video game to remix them in a pixel art universe. You play a succession of SUPER games that are all nods to the video game culture.

But it’s even more SUPER than that. The proposed installation also adapts to the place of exhibition and to the people who play it. We worked with the ATELIERS MEDICIS in Clichy-sous-bois to create several mini-games with the children of the city. You can now play video game SUPER PORTRAITS that tell, through the game, the life of the inhabitants of Clichy-sous-bois.
