Edmond Couchot

En 2019, j’ai entrepris un travail de recherche sur Edmond Couchot, pionnier de l’art numérique en France, scientifique reconnu et aussi co-fondateur de la formation universitaire où je venais d’être recruté à l’Université Paris 8 : Arts et Technology de l’image.
Riche d’une pensée développée dans 7 ouvrages et plus d’une centaines d’articles sur 40 ans, j’ai désiré rendre compte de l’évolution de sa pensée et la rendre accessible aux jeunes chercheurs et artistes. Il me semble inconcevable de pratiquer l’art numérique ou de mener des recherches à ce sujet, en France, sans connaître a minima celui que l’on pourrait appeler le père de l’art numérique français.
En plus d’être un scientifique lu et relu en France, il était aussi un artiste accompli dès les années 50 avec des oeuvres d’une technicité rare, même pour aujourd’hui. Il abordait frontalement la question de l’autonomie de l’intelligence artificielle et la beauté du numérique à travers des machines lumino-cinétiques.

In 2019, I undertook a research project on Edmond Couchot, a pioneer of digital art in France, a recognized scientist and also co-founder of the university course I had just been recruited to at Paris 8 University: Arts et Technology de l’image.
With a body of thought developed in 7 books and over a hundred articles over 40 years, I wanted to give an account of the evolution of his thinking and make it accessible to young researchers and artists. It seems inconceivable to me to practice or research digital art in France without knowing at least a little about the man who could be called the father of French digital art.
As well as being a scientist read and re-read in France, he was also an accomplished artist from the 50s onwards, with works of a technicality that is rare even today. He tackled head-on the question of the autonomy of artificial intelligence and the beauty of the digital through lumino-kinetic machines.

5 journées d’études ont été organisé sur un ouvrage clé à chaque fois, avec des intervenants ayant participé à l’écriture ou aux discussions de l’époque. Avec Marie-Hélène Tramus, nous avons entrepris l’organisation d’un grand colloque international de 3 jours qui s’est tenu à l’Université Paris 8 et au Centre des Arts d’Enghien-les-bains du 16 au 18 novembre 2022. Nous ont rejoins à ce projet Sophie Daste et Julien Lomet. Cette merveilleuse équipe a permis la tenue de ce colloque, ainsi qu’une exposition d’artistes numériques en lien avec Edmond Couchot. Nous avons pu exposer le travail de plus de 50 artistes autour d’une trentaine d’oeuvres, exposées dans le Centre des Arts d’Enghien-les-bains. Nous avons pu éditer un catalogue d’exposition, véritable miroir de l’âme artistique d’Edmond Couchot. Le vernissage de l’exposition a rassemblé une foule de passionnés de l’art numérique en hommage au brillant chercheur décédé en 2020.

5 study days were organized on a key work each time, with speakers who had taken part in the writing or discussions of the period. With Marie-Hélène Tramus, we undertook the organization of a major 3-day international colloquium held at the Université Paris 8 and the Centre des Arts d’Enghien-les-bains from November 16 to 18, 2022. We were joined on this project by Sophie Daste and Julien Lomet. This wonderful team made it possible to hold this symposium, as well as an exhibition of digital artists in connection with Edmond Couchot. We were able to showcase the work of over 50 artists in some thirty works, exhibited in the Centre des Arts d’Enghien-les-bains. We were also able to publish an exhibition catalog, a true reflection of Edmond Couchot’s artistic soul. The exhibition vernissage brought together a host of digital art enthusiasts to pay tribute to the brilliant researcher who passed away in 2020.
