How is collective creation made possible?
I study the technical and organisational systems behind the production of images in animation, visual effects and video games: the tools, workflows, standards, decisions and forms of coordination that shape creative work.
01 / RESEARCH QUESTIONS
From the image to its conditions of production.
An image does not emerge from tools alone. It depends on a changing arrangement of people, data, software, infrastructure and judgements about quality.
To study the technical and organisational systems that enable collective creation, and develop explicit, transferable and reusable models from them.
How does a production pipeline work?
Beyond a list of software: dependencies, circulation of data, validation and coordination across teams.
Where is creative latitude negotiated?
The relationship between artists’ decisions, technical constraints, supervisory review and studio organisation.
What changes with new technologies?
Real-time methods, automation and generative AI, analysed through actual production practices.
02 / METHODS
Observe, describe, model, test.
The inquiry combines studio fieldwork with technical analysis. A model is useful when it can be confronted with concrete situations and shared beyond one production.
Interviews and observation of studio practices.
Map workflows, dataflows and decision points.
Compare animation, VFX and games across contexts.
Test proposed models against cases and experiments.
The framework describes an ongoing research approach, not a universal pipeline for all studios.
03 / RESEARCH PROJECTS
Programmes and investigations.
Specific projects provide sites for inquiry. This selection combines current work and an earlier research programme.
CURRENT / RESEARCH
CGI Studies — production and technology
Studio fieldwork begun in 2024 on the relationship between production, techniques and learning in animation, VFX and video games. Includes work connected to Paneurama.
EARLIER / DIGITAL ART
Edmond Couchot — research and exhibition
Research into Couchot’s work, followed by study days, a 2022 international symposium and an exhibition on digital art.
04 / PUBLICATIONS
Writing and sharing the research.
Articles, conference papers, teaching resources and research materials document different stages of this work.
